Camping in Nigeria; how to plan, what to pack and where to camp.

Camping in Nigeria isn’t one of the top adventures yet in this country. But it’s fast becoming a trend. Hello family, it’s another #spillitall post and this one is my first camping /travel experience for the year. Take it from someone that feeds on a lot of camping content, my first experience was magical. Let start from the beginning, shall we?! On a faithful afternoon, my friend Seyi had a lucid dream about camping and he won’t stop talking about it all through the day and as a camping lover myself, I jumped on that opportunity to plan what would become an amazing experience and a goal I wanted to smash… camping at the top of Owu falls! the highest waterfall in Nigeria! Reached out to some of our friends, and just like that without no much talking or preparation everybody came on board to plan this crazy experience for a cross-over night into the new year. Want more gist on what went down and virtual representation of our experience check my story highlight on Instagram @thattokelady A few things went wrong and some went perfectly well, it was my first camping experience and here are the dos and don’ts of planning a camping experience The Don’ts while planning your first camping experience: 1: Don’t leave your house without proper planning: Yes! excitement sometimes, can rule this out for you. And as a first-time camper, you may or may not know what to plan, pack or do. So in this blogpost, I will share that with you. 2: Pack light: I will use my friend Seyi as an example, his camping bag looked like he’ll be gone for 10 months. Not just him, a couple other guys were victims of packing a lot more than they’d actually need. I know, because you’re going to the top of the hill for some nights make you feel like you need to pack everything and anything. Don’t! its a trap, it’s going to make hiking difficult and stressful for you. Once you’re stressed you begin to lose the excitement and you get fatigued. 3: Don’t set out late; we had a couple of things that made us set out late one being my bike accident on the morning of the hike.So here is the thing, you want to get to your camping spot as early as possible for so many reasons.i: To study the area before setting your camp.ii: The best place to set up your camping tent.iii: To know if the environment is safe enough to spend the night. 4: Resist arguments and misunderstandings amongst your friends/camping buddies; This can either make or break the experience. We had quite a few misunderstandings and at a point, it limited the fun in our collective experiences. We were a bunch of cool kids meeting for the first time so you can say it’s allowed. 5: If you are all strangers planning a trip together Make sure you guys have a meet up at least once before the trip Discuss everything together and make proper planning Discuss each others fears and expectations on the trip. Make sure you all agree on the duration of the trip. What to pack for the trip. While planning this trip we thought of packing everything that we thought would have made the trip easy, fun and lively. Some of these things we ended up not using: Essentials kits for campers Tent Sleeping bags( we didn’t have one so we substituted with a duvet) Sleeping pads Camping pillow( a throw pillow or a neck rest should go fine) Headlamps or flashlights (with extra batteries) Lantern (rechargeable or kerosene needed) camp mug /cup Drinkable water; you might have to take enough water with you Non-perishable food If you’ll be staying more than a night or two. Then you need these kitchen utensils. Stove and fuel ( there are small camping stoves with coal) Matchboxes or lighters pots Sharp knife Plates/bowls Cutting board Cooler Ice or ice substitutes Water bottles Camp sink or wash bins Pot sponge(s) Trash/recycling bags(whilst packing all of these, be sure if you’ll be cooking or not and if you’ll be, make decisions on stuff you’ll be cooking before leaving the house so as to know what to pack.) Your personal needs: Toilet paper Hand sanitizer Toothbrush and toothpaste Toiletry kit Quick-dry towel Prescription medications First-aid kit or first-aid supplies Sun and bug protection: Sunscreen Sunglasses Sun hat or face cap Lip balm Insect repellent Urinary products Sanitation trowel (if no toilets) Baby wipes Brush/comb Eyeshades Earplugs Portable camp shower Credit card and/or cash ID Mobile phone Power banks (extra power source) Where to camp in Nigeria. There are no designated camping sites in Nigeria but, if you’re an adventurer that likes outdoor activities then there are a few of places to camp at. At the top of Owufalls, Kwara state. Obudu cattle ranch, cross-river state Lufasi park, Lagos state Jaybee resort, Tarkwa bay beach Lagos. Ado-awaye mountain top, Iseyin oyo state. Iderehills, Oyo state. Hilltops at Mambilla plateau. For some of the destination above you will have to make an enquiry from the facility and reserve your camping site. I selected this destinations based on security and you might need to reach out to the attractions management to inform them ahead of you coming. There are numerous places to camp In Nigeria and as I explore more camping grounds I will keep you updated with more information. Kindly share your first camping experience with Us in the comments or on my social media accounts. See you soonest Family ❤️

#Budjecttravel: Nike Guesthouse Osogbo.

What better way to welcome you into the new year than spilling all the tea to help you enjoy life and travel on a budget. Happy new year Family, wishing you a great year of plenty, grace and bountiful. And oh yes, a year of more travel and adventure. You might want to bookmark this post for your next budget minimalist getaway. Last week, I curated a private trip for a client to some south-western states in Nigeria. Having to plan someone else’s experience and making sure they have fun every step of the way is gangster. On our way to Osogbo, Osun state. I already made reservations at a hotel, and shortly afterwards it struck me that i had read somewhere about a minimalist art guest house in the City. Right there and then I cancelled the hotel reservation and opted for this guest house, with hopes that my client would be pleased with my impromptu decision. Ladies and gentlemen… pleased he indeed was. I set my instastory on fire with Peng content from the guest house, most of my followers had lots of questions, enough questions to make you think they had gotten a bus, or booked a flight to this destination. So here are the answers to all the questions in my DM. • Name of the Guesthouse: Nike Guest House. If you know the most popular Nike art gallery in Lagos state you will be pleased to know that there’s another piece of art in the heart of Osogbo city and it’s my favourite. The art representation isn’t just from the artwork but in every single detail of the building. Its distance to and from the town: The Nike guest house is located at Ofatedo junction, a bit far from the bustling and hustling of the city. I mean, why go for a vacation if it’s not to leave the noise behind? • How to get there? From any bus-stop in Osogbo from the popular ones that you’ll be dropped at is, Oke-Fia, take a bike to Ofatedo junction. Cost varies from N150-200 • How much does it cost per night? The most impressive thing about this place is how budget friendly it is.There are two buildings in the compound with different room arrangements and the interesting thing is, regardless of what room you decide to go for, be it a two-bed room, a single bedroom ensuite with an open bathroom, It costs just N5,000 per night to stay in that luscious cozy apartment. • What about feeding? This is one mind boggling; how they could serve us a buffet on a N1,500 breakfast bill. When we got a message that breakfast has been set in the garden, we were surprised as to what was on the table. Breakfast cost: N1,500 (buffet that’s enough for myself and my client) Dinner cost: N2,500 (buffet also) You’ll be asked what you prefer for dinner and that my dear friends you’ll get.The meals were delicious and well served In old Ajase plates, this gave off a vintage and an artistic feel. • Why do you love this place? Art, Nature and serenity. The guest house is so peaceful I almost didn’t want to leave. The beautiful, well-mounted art pieces in the sitting room welcoming us into the ambience of the art room was all the cosiness I needed for relaxation after a long drive. The beautiful garden was adorned with steel artworks, the greenery, the sitting area, the tall trees, the few animals there put me in wonderland. It worth more than what they charge and i wouldn’t be exaggerating when I say; it is home away from home. • Do we need to book ahead? Not really, but to be safe and not meet a fully booked guest house on your arrival, booking ahead is the smart move. When I swept the Internet for information on bookings, I found none except my knowledge of where the art gallery was located. I headed there and made all the enquiries that was needed, to save you the stress. For bookings and reservations:Mr Hakeem (Nike Guest House)0810 038 0032 •How fast are they to responses? They are just a phone call away. I would say it’s a place for everyone to visit.Anytime you find yourself in Osogbo, you can plan a simple getaway for relaxation. Another perk of this apartment. If you’re lucky enough to be the only one in the building, you can throw yourself a naked party 😆. Other places to visit around the apartment. Osun-osogbo grove Graffiti bar Freedom park No promises of daily or weekly content yet for now but I promise to do better than the year before and not hoard information. Cheers to a great year Family, let’s get this travel journey started already. Be with you shortly. Alarinka cares ❤️

The Tranquility of Lagos: A day at Epe Mangrove, Ibeju Lekki.

You know that as e dey hot content like hot amala with Ewedu and gbegiri with orisirisi. Pardon my hype, maybe because I just finished these delicious Yoruba delicacies that’s why I’m all in my feelings. But you already know what it is. Earlier today myself and two of my friends Tamara.doubrah and @explorewitheby took the next available cab to Epe Mangrove which is located in Ibeju Lekki. It took about 52 minutes from my house at Lakowe to Ibeju. Before visiting, my social media friend Lota helped with a local guide contact Mr Mufu and we made all the  proper arrangements before heading out. On our arrival at Ibeju junction we took a bike with Mr.Mufu to where we took the Canoe ride to Abejoye- village. The ride sighhhhhh! It was therapeutic , the tranquility in nature, the slow ride on a local canoe paddled by Mr Mufu’s boys was calm, silent with birds chirping and cool breeze. We were lucky for the sun set out late today. Literally I was  the sun. You sef see babe 🥰 In the community which one of their local  businesses  is Garri processing and cassava planting. As you all know I’m the Queen of Garri , I joined in to assist the friendly and smiley women to fry Garri, I love Garri more so much   for me to just walk pass without paying my respect to those who go through fire and flames to satisfy my thirst for crunchy, dry and white Garri.. Moving forward we took a cab to the famous Epe Fishing Market and to my shock there are various animals on display for sales. Varies from Tortoise to crocodile, prawns and the popular big Wedding fish called Eja odo. These fishes are enormous In sizes and their prices varies from N1000- 12,000 (5-30$) The market isn’t just a fish market, it’s a proper market that has everything only that’s it’s famous for its big fishes. On our way back we stopped to get Palm-wine which is one of their biggest production in the community and to our surprise we got a 5 litre undiluted fresh Palm-wine for  N700 about $2. To end the already fulfilling day, our cab man took us to a roadside restaurant where we had one of the best Amala with gbegiri and Ogunfe( goat meat) Verdict: It’s a great getaway spot from the hustle and bustle of Lagos. The boat ride is all you need to enjoy nature and relax your nerves. When you visit make sure you clear your mind, leave your worries at home just enjoy the silence and tranquility. Your soul would thank you for it.It’s a nice experience. Best Time to visit: It’s a advisable not to visit when it’s sunny, before sunrise or evening. So you can enjoy the experience. Hours to explore: It took us about 5 hours to explore Epe mangrove and the fishing Market.  Cost:  Tour-guide – N4,000 this covers the attractions, boat fee, life jacket also Mr Mufu’s services. Transportation: This  where you’re coming from or the mode of transportation you choose to use.  As for me it cost N2,000 to and fro _  including the cab we hired from Ibeju to Epe which cost N3,500 for the three of us. Mr Mufu Contact : +234 803 481 9471 Other things to do at Epe Mangrove. Learn how to make adire fabrics – Visit the palm wine spot where you can learn how to and get yourself some. This is definitely worth visiting again because trust me, I have some unfinished business in the community. Have you ever been to Epe Mangrove, was YG he experience has amazing has mine? Kindly share below let’s chat. And if you’ll like to visit by seeing my post, let’s chat also.

Lema; The Golden Slum

On a faithful Thursday morning I journeyed to a local government called Edu in the city of Kwara State. It was quite a lazy ride but I had the strong conviction that I’ve to make it to the town on this day. Boarded a bus from Maraba park in ilorin for a thousand naira to Lafiaji which is the headquarter of Edu local government area. The journey of about 2hours was quite fast because I was lost reading the awesomeness called Tiffany haddish book; the last unicorn. I bet you’ve read it too if not you need to grab one asap( I digress) On getting to Lafiaji my hosts who are the tourism representative in Edu welcomed me with an open arm has we toured the small town of Lafiaji My tour of the town was quite short it took about 2 hours for there was nothing really concentrated in the town in terms of tourism attractions and they seemed to be living quite alright so I thought to myself. This Local government area doesn’t need me. My host offered to take me back to the park on his Bajaj bike and that was when it all dawn on me; just maybe my work here isn’t done after all. 15km away from Lafiaji was this small community signpost boldly written “Lema the home of orthopedics “ For the strangest reason, I began to question how they are home to orthopedics and why they name themselves such. Because it stood out from every community slogans I have seen , every other slogans has been cliche; like home of hospitality etc. but home of orthopedics nah! that got my attention. We took the right U-turn and off we zoomed to the Lema community, it was indeed a community of closed people and everyone seems to be a descendent  of another. Visited the Orthopedic hospital of Lema and met different people with broken legs and arms. Some has been there for 6months and over. It was said that nobody that has been there has ever gone back home without been completely healed. This orthopedic hospital has been in existence for more than 100years (so they said) and it has been a generational thing for the family. This hospital is so unkept, not hygienic and they are tons of people there receiving treatment. While asking around about what other things the Lema community possesses, they were quick to say “ mining ” and my next question was mining what?  And they said “Stone mining”   to cut this story short. I jumped back on my host bike and on a rocky ride of 60 minutes was a small village called bako the mining site. Have you ever been to a slum? E.g Ajegunle slum, this destination is on another level. They are different people from different tribes living in bako for the stones. I saw women, men and children walked about 50km from Lema to bako to go mine stones. In a dangerous and life threatening condition. Things I observed;  – This slum has no clean water; they only have one well that serves hundreds of time They have no schools; They are lots of children around and they don’t go to school and the whole of Lema only has one school which is about 80 km away. They live in bamboo houses, unhygienic houses. No hospital, nothing nothing I asked one of them named Sulaimon where he is from? He is the only one that understands English and he said Kebbi State. My next question was why do you leave Kebbi state to live in this slum?  His response; In search of Greener pastures. Not only that this people condition of living is terrible I heard they have death casualties from digging holes in search for these special stones. This destination has been the hardest for me to decide whether they need help or they need to be evacuated from this premises. I know they are in search of greener pasture but then again this is not a conducive environment for anyone to live in and they are exposing themselves to dangers. Here are my questions; what do you think can be done? Should they be sent back to their various states? But keep in mind that some Of them have been living here for almost 22years of their lives. should the government monetize this mining business and provide them with basic amenities and a better standard of living? Because when I asked them if the government knew about this stone mining and their existence in this community, their answer was Yes. Do you think we should source for NGOS, Companies and stakeholders to provide them with basic amenities like clean water, schools, environmental sanitation, et.c? I know it’s been a while I posted here, just call me the lazy travel blogger because right now I’m sitting on that table conveniently. But you can always catch up with my adventures on Instagram @thattokelady. I will like to read from you soon, for your feedback will go a long way in helping me make a decisions on how we can help this people live a more appropriate life. Alarinka cares ❤️
